What You Can Do to Help Tibet Justice Center Gain Accreditation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development

Right now, we think the most effective strategy for Tibet Justice Center's accreditation to the WSSD is to put our energy into lobbying our US Congress and Senate to put pressure on the State Department. The State Department can give the US delegation the go ahead to step-up its lobbying efforts on behalf of our accreditation. Please call or fax your local representatives! If you are not a US resident, please call or fax your Permanent Representative to the United Nations. If you are in a Latin American country, your efforts are especially requetsed. Your lobbying can encourage your country's delegation to refuse to vote with the G77 block. A sample letter follows. Thank you for your support! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any further questions.

SAMPLE LETTER

March 29, 2002

Dear :

I am writing to respectfully request that you support Tibet Justice Center's accreditation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development. The Chinese government opposes Tibet Justice Center's application on political grounds. However, I believe their allegations are unfounded for the following reasons:

1)  The Chinese government has already recognized the legitimacy and relevance of Tibet Justice Center by negotiating directly with its representatives at two World Conservation Union Congresses, in 1996 and again in 2000. At both of those sessions, Tibet Justice Center was able to reach  agreements with Chinese government representatives on water management issues of mutual concern. Both resolutions were adopted by consensus.

2)  Tibet Justice Center's objective for participating in WSSD is to continue to create dialogue between Chinese and Tibetan participants. Through environment and development work, Tibet Justice Center has done more to foster cooperation between these two groups than the UN has in the past 50 years. Tibet Justice Center believes that communication and collaboration are necessary to promote environmental protection and sustainable development in Tibet.

3)  Tibet Justice Center supports the principle of self-determination for all peoples as provided in the United Nation's own covenants, and promotes non-violent resolution of the conflict between the Tibetan people and the Chinese government. The UN Charter clearly does not prohibit debate on these topics.

4)  Tibet Justice Center meets the criteria for accreditation promulgated by the Secretariat. With more than 10 years of experience in environment and development issues, they can offer a valuable perspective.

This matter will come to a vote on Friday, April 5th. Tibet Justice Center is fighting for their right to participate in what was promised  to be an open, transparent, and highly participatory process. I urge you to do what is right and support Tibet Justice Center's legitimate claim to participation in this process.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Your name and address
