Tibet Justice Center Deserves Accreditation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development

Tibet Justice Center has a legitimate claim to accreditation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development and its preparatory meetings for the following reasons:

1. Tibet Justice Center (formerly International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet) has strong credentials and 12 years of experience in the areas of environment and sustainable development.

  • Our organization has expertise in policy analysis and advocacy related to women’s and children’s issues; linkages between the environment and human rights; water use and transboundary water management; and globalization.

  • We are active members of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Since 1990, we have analyzed and presented Tibetan environment and development concerns to our IUCN member colleagues.

2. We have successfully worked with our Chinese government colleagues to forge agreements on environmental issues of mutual concern.

  • We have a proven track record in face-to-face negotiations with Chinese government delegations at both World Conservation Congresses. In 1996, we successfully negotiated agreement on issues of concern related to a hydroelectric project on a sacred lake in Tibet. In 2000, we again negotiated an agreement on protection of Asia’s major river systems and we supported the Chinese delegation’s introduction of a resolution on protection of the Tibetan antelope. We come to the Summit and the preparatory process believing in the possibility of agreement between disparate groups on issues of mutual concern.
3. A world summit deserves to hear the voices of all the world’s people.
  • In its official conference documentation, the UN has promised “a preparatory process and a Summit that is open, transparent and highly participatory. The Summit is expected to be the largest global event to-date and to set new participatory precedents.” As an organization that meets all of the criteria established for participation in the Summit, Tibet Justice Center’s accreditation should be supported if the Summit is to maintain its credibility as a truly global forum.
